"School Community" click image to enlarge The school as a living entity; a real contrast between the pictures of the previous pages with the empty building. It is our goal to reconstruct this building so that it can become once again the main school building... fully equipped.
The school as a living entity ... Upper right: every year a day of the bread is organised. Upper right: over and over again this school shows the population what it is able to. Middle right: the feast of the bread. Right under: the school choir. Left under: the theatre group of the school. Middle left: the children are receiving the New Year surprise present. Middle: children are tomorrows future. And thats a good raison to provide them with a good education.
The Edmond Jardas Parents Plan already supports this school... One can see it clearly.

Text Project "School Obrovac" |
| xThe project to support
one of the needy schools in Croatia financially and materially had often been the subject
of the reunions of our humanitarian association, the Edmond Jardas Parents
Plan. The majority of our members felt that the school we were going to support was
not necessarily to be situated in a large town and that it really should be a school that
needed all possible help.
Via Mrs. Sofija Bucic (president of the association of war widows - Zadar region / Croatia) we received the first information concerning this school. And thats how we contacted the direction of the school. But in order to have a better understanding of the situation, we considered it necessary for us to send someone of our group to Obrovac and to examine the situation directly on the spot. So, during the month of august, the president of our association, together with her husband, has visited the school in Obrovac at the invitation of Mr. Modric Zeljko, director of the school, and the technical teacher. This was our first direct contact. There have been many visits since in order to stay in touch with all the needs of the local population. During the pre-war period two schools were active in the town of Obrovac. One building for the pupils of the primary school, the other building for the students of the secondary school. During the recent war, the building of the secondary school has been so badly damaged, that the security of students and teachers could no longer be guaranteed. Bringing both school systems under one roof, that of the primary school, was the most practical solution. This solution however immediately provoked other problems. A special morning/afternoon scheme had to be elaborated to give enough room to both the pupils of the primary school and the students of the secondary school. Mr. Dirk Stuer proposed us to send a questionnaire to the director of the school. He immediately responded (the original letter can be found in our archives). He told us that at the moment, there were 120 pupils of the primary school and 150 students of the secondary school, all in that one same building. But in the near future, when the fugitives will be returning back home during the so called stabilisation process, the number of pupils and students will increase significantly. Taking in consideration the predictions of the direction of the school, one can expect an increase of 360 respectively 380 new pupils and students by the year 2001-2002. The actual situation is now as follows: there are 120 pupils in the primary school and 150 students in the secondary school, all (270) in just one building. This children dispose of 7 personal computers. The classroom for the technical courses is rather primitive. So, the teacher-engineer (very badly paid) has enormous difficulties to show the children the things they have to learn. Furthermore, the students have an enormous shortage of satchels, writing material, study books, drawing paper, triangles, compasses, ... And for the courses of physical education they need: ... sport shoes, training suits, footballs, volleyballs, basketballs, ... We came to the conclusion that in this case help was needed urgently. We know that we cannot solve this problem on our own, neither can the local inhabitants. But with the help of our many highly motivated co-operators, the many sponsors, our personal friends and ALL people of good will ... we can and will realise a lot. In the past war period, our association has already shown what it is capable of. We sent numerous food convoys and adopted many orphans (project still running). And now we have also decided to support this school. Our project is double: Support and Build. On the next pages we will give you further explanation of Support and Build with some pictures and some more details. And at the end you will find Something already exists. Yes indeed... something already exists. This project isnt starting from zero. One school building may be standing there, empty and needing a complete refurbishment. The other may function already but with a lot of things to improve and to complete... nevertheless something already exists! The local school community and the town community are already very active since the end of the war period, and have done a lot of excellent things with few means. But some things are just too much for them. Like restoring the entire school building and providing each child with the necessary school material. And thats where we intervene, like mentioned in the chapters Support and Building. And soon, there wont be any need for Support or Building. There just will be Something already exists ... and even a lot of it. "Support" The support is already going on for some time now. Personal computers have been provided, and sport material, and school material, ... all this elements make part of a living school community. During the first year of our Support we have already provided 4 new personal computers (these personal computers are already installed and being used by the students), sport material, sport shoes and T-shirts for all the children of the first year. Its also our intention to make a yearly returning habit of this. We consider this the red thread of our support program. Supporting all the children of the first year by providing them with a pair of quality sport shoes, all sorts of things for school and T-shirts. And we will do this year after year and soon, the whole school community will be fully equipped. We also keep contact with the direction of the school on a regular basis. And they tell us what sort of material they need. Through our network of loyal co-operators we are continuously looking for new quality material (in Belgium and abroad, even on the internet) and sending it to the school. Everything is welcome: furniture, sport material, and computer material ... even second hand material. By the way, the Obrovac school has an excellent informatics teacher. He works miracles with everything that passes through his hands. We support the in many ways, on the right spots where all possible help is really needed. You can help us with everything to help these people. Large or small, a pair of sport shoes, 20-30 personal computers, hundreds of pens, school paper. All will be delivered to this children. And therefore, everybody and also you can help us financially and materially to support this school community. "Building" Help with the reconstruction of the destroyed little school next to the school, which is now in service. An empty pre-war school. The direction of the school in Obrovac has sent us a cost-evaluation of all the material needed for this project and a detailed building scheme of the empty school building. Youll find the cost-evaluation a little bit further on in this brochure. This construction project is a bigger and more ambitious project than providing the children with all sorts of school material. We are still looking for one or more sponsors willing to help us financially in the realisation of the construction project. You can always contact our secretary (all necessary information is mentioned in chapter EJPP) if you really want to help us. For instance, if you can provide us with material, tips or any kind of information, ... so that this children can go to school under optimal conditions in their own environment. Together we get stronger. Together we can achieve a lot for a brighter future for this Croatian children. They also have the right to enjoy a happy and prosperous life. Just like you. Just like us. "Somthing already exists" We dont have to start from zero. Absolutely not. The local community is also very active. Under the direction of Mr. Modric Zeljko, this school knows very well how to give the right formation and education to this children. This school isnt just another school between the many others. The school has its own choir, a chess club, a football team, ... and attracts the attention in its region. Thats way the Edmond Jardas Parents Plan has chosen this project, it really deserves our trust. This project is not just a matter of supporting, but also of co-operation, because the local people are very competent and can handle our help very efficiently. x |
